In 1069 the famous monk Anthony, the establisher of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, had come to Chernihiv. He had established the cave monastery of St. Virgin behind the city walls, which he wanted to be not worse than Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The Boldyni Mountains were the most suitable for this, because the gullies were comfortable for the caves.
It had passed almost a thousand years after the digging the first cave in Chernihiv. The monastery was created on the example of the ancient cave Orthodox monasteries and had represented not a big cave town, situated on the slopes of the gully and consisted of a great number of underground buildings. The Anthony’s caves are only the part of the cave complex, which had existed here. Today we can surely say about seven known Old Russian caves, but undoubtedly there were much more. We know that the monastery has consisted of not big underground buildings. There were the caves for monk’s dwelling, cave and underground temples. Besides, the considerable number of the land buildings entered into the monastery. Only Illinska church has kept till nowadays.
At first time the monastery was remembered only in 1649. The end of XVII and XVIII century is the period of Chernihiv development and monastery’s prosperity. In 1649 Illinska church has been renewed. The monastery has been building up, even the new cave complexes have appeared called the New Anthony’s caves. It becomes the residence of Chernihiv’s archibishops.
The Boldyni mountains with the ancient Illinska church and the Anthony’s caves, which are the decoration of Chernihiv national historical and architectural preserve “The Ancient Chernihiv” , have a great popularity among the tourists.
Every year over 37 thousand of tourists visit the caves. The underground cells, the temples and the tombs don’t leave any visitor indifferent, making an impression of real visit to the history. The archeological excavations have been lasting here for thirty years. One of the last important findings is the rests of the printing house the end of XVII – the beginning of XVIII century. Quiet recently the lower storey of the Anthony’s caves was opened for the excursions. These are the underground gallery, the square near 100 sq. meters, with the monk’s cells and rooms for the burials. So the visitors of this unique museum can see the new pages of the past.
