The Intercession of Holy Virgin Cathedral in Kharkiv

The Intercession of Holy Virgin cathedral is the stone building of the cathedral was built by Cossacks outside of that time fortress boarders, near its northern wall, in 1689 instead of the wooden church. In that year the temple was sanctified by the metropolitan Abraham. The Intercession cathedral is the valuable monument of the Ukrainian architecture of the second part of XVII century. This is the baroque three cupola church, placed on the warm winter temple. The upper, cold church, is surrounded with the gallery and has united with the bell tower.

The brick patterned plat bands with the multisectoral cornices, the belt of rectangular hollows are added with the images of sun.

The Opera and Ballet Theatre in Kharkiv

Kharkiv State Ukrainian Academic theatre of opera and ballet named after M.Lysenko is the first Ukrainian stationary opera theatre. It stages the performances in Ukrainian, Russian, French and Italian. The theatre was organized in 1925 as Ukrainian State Capital Opera, on the base of constant opera enterprise.

Kharkiv enterprise had staged the Ukrainian operas, such as “The Christmas night” and “The sink woman” by M.Lysenko; since 1918 it was named People’s opera, since 1920 – Russian State Opera. 32 operas and 11 ballets were staged in the theatre till 1934. The numerous operas of the world and Russian repertory were staged.
